Accounting Applications Series

Description: Students will be challenged to perform management functions and tasks focusing on the application of financial data to business planning, including collection and organization of data, development and use of reports, and analysis of data to make business decisions. Concepts include understanding the source and purpose of financial statements, the impact of management decisions on statements, and the analysis and interpretation of data for planning purposes.
Event overview: 1 participant, cluster exam, 2 role-plays
Event timing: 10 minutes of preparation, 10 minutes of presentation time
Recommended if: You’ve taken an accounting, bookkeeping, or personal finance class, feel comfortable working with accounting records and can record, report, and evaluate financial data appropriately.
Recommended years of DECA experience: 1 year of experience

Business Finance Series

Description: Students will be challenged to perform management functions and tasks focusing on high-level financial and business planning, including collection and organization of data, development and use of reports, and analysis of data to make business decisions. Concepts include understanding the source and purpose of financial statements, the impact of management decisions on statements, and the analysis and interpretation of data for corporate planning purposes.

Event overview: 1 participant, cluster exam, 2 role-plays

Event timing: 10 minutes of preparation, 10 minute presentation time

Recommended if: You have taken a personal finance, or economics class, you can discuss the nature of depreciation, cash flows, corporate bonds, and stocks

Recommended years of DECA experience:  1 year of experience

Finance Operations Research

Description: Finance includes banks, credit unions, accounting, investments and other financial businesses.

Event overview: 1-3 participants, 20 page paper (max)
Event timing: 15 minute presentation time
Recommended if: you’d like to avoid a test (no test!), you have connections with a local business or organization to analyze current customer perceptions of the company, or can analyze a marketing plan
Recommended years of DECA experience: 1 year of experience

Financial Consulting

Description: For 2018-2019 you will assume the role of a financial consultant. A young professional has come to you for advice on setting a monthly budget including recommendations on a savings plan. The young professional’s annual salary is $40,000. The young professional has student loans, wants to live a millennial lifestyle and save for the future. The young professional would like you to make recommendations for a monthly budget.
Event overview: 1 participant, cluster exam
Event timing: 15 minute presentation
Recommended if: You can plan a monthly budget, and can be adaptive to new ideas presented by the judge

Financial Services Team Decision Making

Description: Financial services refer to services offered in the finance industry by financial institutions. Concepts include understanding the source and purpose of financial statements, the impact of management decisions on statements, and the analysis and interpretation of data for planning purposes.
Event overview: 2 participants, cluster exam, 1 role-play
Event timing: 30 minutes of preparation, 15 minutes to present
Recommended if: You have good speaking skills and can present things with little notice
Recommended years of DECA experience: 1 year of experience

Principles of Finance

Description: The business situation will use language associated with careers in Accounting, Banking Services, Business Finance, Insurance and Securities, and Investments.
Event overview: 1 participant, Business Administration cluster exam, 1 role-play
Event timing: 10 minutes of preparation time, 10 minutes to present
Recommended if: This is your first DECA competition or it is your first year of DECA, and you have taken a personal finance class, or introduction to business class
